Travel to Kazakhstan

Period: from March to November
Duration: 7 days | Destination: Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is one of the ninth largest countries in the world and is rarely visited by travelers! However, it is the perfect place for those who love nature and adventure. Kazakhstan offers you magnificent discoveries of mountainous and desert landscapes with its canyons, glaciers, and liturgical lakes located in the Tien Shan mountains and the Altai. Well-traveled along the Silk Road, situated in the Kyzyl Kum steppe between the Caspian Sea and China, allow yourself to marvel at the dynamism of this former Soviet republic, which has become the most developed country in Central Asia thanks to its oil and rich mineral resources!

This week-long trip will introduce you to Kazakhstan by visiting Almaty, the old capital, and the new Astana, which is essential for a better understanding of the Kazakh people and their culture.

Day 1 EUROPE – ASTANA
Flight to Astana. Overnight on board.

A city with a constant layout, Astana has tripled its population since the capital was officially moved there in 1997, and its extravagant modernist urban design, completing the perception of one person’s world, explains the success and extravagance!

Day 2 ASTANA
Arrival early in the morning. Meet and transfer to the hotel for breakfast and a brief rest.

Excursion: Bayterek, the symbol of Astana, resembling the tree of life; Peace and Accord Palace; the extensive Presidential Museum dedicated to the history and art of the country; the Ak Orda Presidential Palace or White House, adjacent to two conical Baza towers housing the ministries; Catholic church, the new Bait Rachel Chabad Lubavitch synagogue, and the central Nur-Astana mosque in the Ak Bulak district; the “Atameken” ethnopark representing Kazakhstan’s territory in models…

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3 ASTANA – ALMATY
Visit the Memorial Museum “ALZHIR”, a former Stalin-era internment camp for women and children of “traitors of the motherland”, which reminds of the horrors of the GULAG system. Then take a ferry ride along the Ishim River, which separates the “new business city” from the remains of the old Soviet-era district. Visit Khan Shatyr, Astana’s most remarkable achievement, a 150m high structure in the shape of a translucent tent, which houses a complex for recreation, relaxation, and elite shopping, creating the illusion of a tropical shore! Transfer to the airport and flight to Almaty.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4 ALMATY
Explore Almaty, Republic Square and its Independence Monument, the National Museum, offering a beautiful panorama of Kazakhstan’s history since ancient times; the popular Panfilov Park and its beautiful Zenkov Orthodox Cathedral, the Victory Memorial, the Museum of Traditional Musical Instruments, the Arasan Baths, and the Central Mosque… Take a walk through the “Green Bazaar”, a charming cosmopolitan market offering all the region’s products; then a visit to the “Sunkar” falcon farm, originally founded to protect these endangered birds: you will be able to witness an eagle hunting demonstration, a tradition of Kazakh nomads…

Day 5 ALMATY
Departure for an excursion to Medeo, where at an altitude of 1733 meters above Almaty, there is a unique sports complex with a huge ice rink, occupying a majestic valley of the Malaya Almatinka River, and a giant dam designed to protect the city from spring floods. Continue by cable car to the Chimbulak ski resort, then to the Talgar Pass at 2300 meters, where the panorama of snow-capped ridges and glaciers rewards all efforts… Then ascend Kok-Tobe, which dominates Almaty, a widely visited area. The attraction offers an unrivaled view of the city and its surroundings.

Day 6 ALMATY – CHARYN CANYON – ALMATY
Depart for an excursion about 200 km east of Almaty to Charyn National Park, where the large canyon, dug and formed by the Charyn River breaking through the Celestial Mountains of Tien Shan, curiously resembles the Colorado Canyon. In these vast Kazakh expanses, a selenite scene of jagged steppes, the most amazing part of which, called the “Valley of Castles,” reveals stone structures in stunning colorful formations.

Day 7 ALMATY – EUROPE
Transfer to Almaty airport and return to Europe.
