Excursion

Samarkand – a magical and almost mythical name, captivating the imagination. A contemporary of Babylon and Thebes, the Greek “Maracanda,” Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world with more than 4,000 years of history. After being destroyed by the ruthless Genghis Khan, it flourished again in the 14th century when Emperor Timur made it the “Jewel of the East”: a magnificent city filled with palaces, monumental mosques, and madrassas adorned with turquoise or indigo-colored clay decorations.

The principal city of ancient Sogdiana, a vassal of which was Panjikent, Samarkand was a center of trade on the Silk Road. The city still shines with azure, cobalt, and jade, with a bluish symphony emanating from the walls of madrassas, mosques, and mausoleums, soaring up into the sky, as if the architects wanted to immediately link these sacred monuments with the divine.

Science made significant strides here: astronomy, medicine, and algebra saw great progress under the guidance of scientists whose names are passed down through history: Ulugh Beg, Avicenna, Al-Khwarizmi, Averroes – so many names that advanced the understanding of the world.
