Tour
Samarkand – a magical name and almost a mythical city that captivates. A contemporary of Babylon and Thebes, the Greek “Maracanda,” it is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a history spanning over 4,000 years. After being destroyed by the ruthless Genghis Khan, it flourished in the 14th century when Emperor Timur (Tamerlane) made it the “Pearl of the East” — an exceptional city filled with palaces, monumental mosques, and madrasas, decorated with turquoise or indigo-colored ceramic tiles. As the main city of ancient Sogdiana, Samarkand was a central hub for trade on the Silk Road.
The city still shines with azure, cobalt, and jade, a bluish symphony that cuts through the walls of madrasas, mosques, and other mausoleums, reaching the sky in a bouquet of ceramics and majolica, as if the architects wanted all these monuments to be immediately associated with the divine. It was here that science made significant advances: astronomy, medicine, and algebra saw great progress under the guidance of scholars whose names have been passed down through history: Ulugh Beg, Avicenna, Al-Khwarizmi, Averroes — so many names that advanced the understanding of the world.
